Microsoft Dynamics AX - Application Architecture
Microsoft Dynamics AX typically operates as a three-tier application. The Microsoft Dynamics AX client connects to the AOS server, which, in turn connect to the back end database server. The client application runs on either user workstations or on a terminal server, which is often chosen to improve application responsiveness and security. The AOS servers act as scalable application servers that execute business logic for clients, then access and manipulate data in the Microsoft SQL Server. As the number of concurrent users’ increases, more AOS servers can be added, scaling out the business logic layer. The database server can also be clustered when you are using a shared storage solution, creating a highly available application.

Microsoft Dynamics AX - Example configuration
Using design principles of simple & affordable, we have developed a set of example configurations for Microsoft Dynamics AX servers and storage that are appropriate for midsize businesses. These configurations help take the complexity out of choosing the right infrastructure platform for your business, while meeting your needs for continuity, security and efficiency.
For midsize Microsoft Dynamics AX deployments the application layer is split from the database server to improve performance, there are at least two scenarios in which this configuration is likely to be recommended:
- Businesses with as few as 25 concurrent users but which have a wide variety of business modules in use.
- Businesses with up to 75 users and general ERP workloads such as financials and sales order processing.
Additional AOS servers can be added as the number of concurrent users’ increases. Typically, one server is added for every 50 to 75 users. More intensive work loads such as manufacturing or user counts beyond 75 may require additional drives for the Microsoft SQL server data volume to achieve the required performance level.
